What fun. There is nothing so good as a good breakup anthem. I am a big fan of sort of "you'll regret this later" songs:

* One Fine Day by the Chiffons (but co-written by Carole King... I should have known)
---- "One fine day, you're gonna want me for your girl..."

* Someday by Mariah Carey
---- "Maybe now you just can't conceive that there'll ever come a time when you're cold and lonely.
... But when your down in your time of need and you're thinking that you might be coming back to own me
Just think again 'cause I won't need your love anymore!"

* What I'd Say by Earl Thomas Conley
-----"hows it going might be what i'd say, you broke my heart you know, or it looks like rain today,
or maybe god i missed you since you went away, your lookin well,
or go to hell might be what i'd say."

Two of the playlists on my ipod are: "Love Songs," and "Down with Love." Despite my chipper behavior, I listen to the latter much more frequently. There is just awesomeness associated with a good broken-hearted song!

Ummm, might I add "Ex-Girlfriend" by No Doubt because, (maybe you can guess who, Mel?), I totally called it before it even got started. I guess I DID think of that before we kissed. :D

Also, to apply to my collegiate English major romance, The Decemberists' Engine Driver with soul-wrenching lines such as, "I am a writer, writer of fictions, I am the heart that you call home. I've written pages upon pages trying to rid you from my bones...and if you don't love me let me go."

*sigh*

Continuing the English major drama with, "Bird Stealing Bread" by Iron and Wine. "tell me, baby, tell me are you still on the stoop watching the windows close? i've not seen you lately on the street by the beach or places we used to go...how i've missed you lately and the way we would speak and all that we wouldn't say..."

Also, "Promising Light" by Iron and Wine and pretty much everything on Richard Buckner's Devotion and Doubt album.

And...maybe "White Flag" by Dido belongs on the list somewhere. Yeah. It definitely had a hand in dragging out the pain of a major breakup much, much longer than it needed to last.

Awesome lists! I really love that you did this, I am going to listen to all of these that I don't already know. Three break-up songs I love that just came to my head while reading this: "Like a Tattoo" by Sade, "Slowly Surely" by Jill Scott, "Til It Happens to You" by Corinne Bailey Rae-gotta listen to these if you haven't heard 'em.

Peace

'I'm not Crying' by the Flight of The Concords - a funny one, it helps. A lot.
'F*ck you' by Cee Lo Green - The title says it all.
And something for the masochistic type: when you want to feel even worse listen to 'Stuck with you' by Voltaire.

Let's get some cowboy up in this bitch.

GONE
MONTGOMERY GENTRY

This ain't no temporary, typical, tearful good-bye, uh uh uh
This ain't no breakin' up and wakin' up and makin' up one more time, uh uh uh
This is gone (gone) gone (gone) gone (gone) gone

Gone like a freight-train, gone like yesterday
Gone like a soldier in the civil war, bang bang
Gone like a '59 Cadillac
Like all the good things that ain't never coming back
She's gone
